www.wsj.com/articles/a-health-care-model-in-coal-country-1443407522"The system focuses to an unusual degree on avoiding unnecessary procedures, in part because it also runs an insurance company that covers many of its patients." Interestingly, Narayana Health also is successful because of their micro-insurance program to farmers. Even in America, Kaiser Permanate has one of the best results because of their integrated insurance/delivery systems. Some people argue that insurance companies with this much vertical integration control the patient and physician's choices and limit the patient-physician relationship. I believe there is some merit in their argument. However, with the lack of integrated EMR and freely exchanged healthcare data, insurance companies are the only ones right now willing & able to invest in the technology to properly track their patients data and work with the delivery partners to provide quality care. If I decide to enter private practice, I believe heavy investment in EMR, telemedicine, and big data is essential for the success of my patients. Although many private physicians dont invest heavily in voluntary technologies, I believe it is essential to go above the required services to provide exceptional care.
